Against the background of new liberal arts, the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative is in need of more critical aboriginal language talents. This paper explains the connotation of new liberal arts and critical aboriginal language talents, and then probes into the principles of cultivating critical aboriginal language talents. Integrating the practices of Shanghai International Studies University, it further discusses the approaches to critical aboriginal language talents cultivation, hoping to shed light on similar studies.

The Less Commonly Taught Languages Revitalization Initiative in the 101 Project is a major representative project focusing on the innovative development in the three major academic disciplines of “Global Languages, Global Cultures, and Global Governance” at Beijing Foreign Studies University during “the 14th Five-Year Plan” period. This paper discusses the contemporary values, strategic goals, implementation routes and cooperation mechanisms of the project. With the concept of a human language community, the project contributes to the enhancement of China's national language capacity and building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

With the further implementation of the “community with a shared future for mankind” concept and the Belt and Road Initiative, it is urgent to cultivate excellent talents with intercultural communication skills. Comparative literature and intercultural studies (CLIS) has therefore been included as one of the major fields in the foreign language and literature discipline for English major students in Chinese universities. Based on a review on the evolution process of “comparative literature and world literature” in the Chinese language and literature discipline to CLIS in the foreign language and literature discipline, this paper discusses the importance of cultivating CLIS talents against the background of following the Teaching Guide for Undergraduate English Major. It then defines the objective of cultivating CLIS talents, and proposes a reference framework and some suggestions for designing courses to materialize the cultivation of CLIS talents.

This article constructs a holistic model of curriculum design for cultivating the compound type foreign language talents by drawing on the research findings of the CLIL (content and language integrated learning) curriculum design and the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind. The model consists of four elements and five steps based on the notion of intercultural understanding, knowledge creation and centering on learning. The four elements include interculture, foreign language, non-language subjects, and thinking. The five steps are establishing trans-disciplinary concepts, stating three-dimension six-aspect learning goals, developing comprehensible materials, designing integrated learning methods, and adopting holistic assessment. Accordingly, in cultivating the compound type foreign language talents, cross-curriculum themes learning should be organized based on trans-disciplinary concepts, polylogues should be carried out to highlight interculture, scaffolding should be provided for students in line with their competence, and “assessment for learning” should be combined with “assessment as learning” to promote learning.

Interactional structures reflect participants' underlying cognitive structures, and productive interactional structures in the classroom can help students engage in deeper cognitive processes. The perspective of conversation analysis has great strength in exploring micro interactional structures, while the perspective of language socialization excels at tracking speech events over time and unravels relationships among language, thoughts, and culture. Integrating these two perspectives, this paper proposes a theoretical framework for investigating structural patterns of classroom interaction in both hierarchical and linear dimensions. It then reviews, relates, and evaluates prior studies on classroom interaction before summarizing their gaps to point out future research directions.

This paper, based on the Biblioshiny package, presents a visualized analysis of the corrective feedback studies in the core database of Web of Science from 2000 to 2021, draws the knowledge maps of intellectual structures and conceptual structures in terms of key words and document citations, and outlines the research routes and core topics of corrective feedback. It is found that the hot topics of the corrective feedback research include written corrective feedback, recast, second language writing, computer-mediated feedback, teacher feedback and so on. Within the increasingly interdisciplinary and diversified theoretical frameworks, the corrective feedback research will put more effort into clarifying the definitions of related concepts, focus on factors affecting feedback effects, optimize experimental designs, and adopt more methods to explore various hot topics. The paper finally puts forward feasible suggestions for the development of the corrective feedback research in China.

This study investigated ESL learners' eye movement patterns in English speed reading based on the cognitive load theory. Two experiments were conducted: Experiment 1 increased the cognitive load through increasing the length of reading materials, and Experiment 2 increased the cognitive load through reducing the reading time. The results showed that the learners with higher reading proficiency level had higher reading accuracy, shorter reaction time, shorter average fixation duration, larger average saccade amplitude, fewer fixation counts and fewer regression counts compared with the lower proficiency level learners. When the cognitive load increased, the learners with higher reading proficiency level adopted flexible reading strategies to improve reading efficiency, while the lower proficiency level learners failed to employ effective reading strategies. Therefore, teachers can develop teaching strategies that focus on improving learners' reading cognitive ability, supplemented by strengthening eye movement flexibility in English speed reading.

Taking 60 Chinese science and engineering major postgraduates as the subjects, and adopting the methods of independent-samples t test, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis, the current study investigated the changes of English morphological awareness (MA) after morpheme training, the relationship between different levels of MA and listening comprehension ability, and the relationship between different types of MA and listening comprehension ability. It had several major findings. First, MA training significantly improved English learners' MA. Second, MA was significantly positively correlated with listening comprehension ability. Third, compound MA exerted the most salient predictive influence on listening comprehension ability, followed by inflectional MA and derivational MA. Implications of the findings concerning MA training were discussed in the end.

Academic motivation is an important factor in improving the innovation capacity of graduate students. This three-year retrodictive qualitative study, with 6 academic-oriented English major graduate students as the participants, explores the longitudinal dynamics of academic motivation through the lens of Dynamic Systems Theory. The findings regarding the participants' motivational trajectories indicate their individual uniqueness as well as the group-level similarity. Individual differences and their interaction with environments result in the variability of the participants' academic motivation, while educational environments dominate the group-level similarity. Therefore, the academic motivation of graduate students can be stimulated and maintained by optimizing educational environments and promoting the interaction between graduate students and educational environments.

The knowledge society in the intelligence era and informatization of foreign language learning have contributed to the rapid development of mobile foreign language learning. But its connotation orientations, definition, key elements, and applications still need more research. From the human-technology perspectives of “alterity relation, hermeneutic relation, background relation and embodiment relation”, this paper attempts to clarify the correspondences of developmental phases of the connotation orientations and other aspects of mobile foreign language learning, and discuss its exploratory definition and key elements. The paper then constructs a quality assessment indicator framework of mobile foreign language learning, centered around learning content, learners and enhancers, which would provide some insightful conceptual understanding, analysis frameworks and assessment practice routes for the related research.

This study collected 1 758 valid questionnaires from college students all over China, and used structural equation modelling to explore the influence of digital nativeness composed of 4 factors on students' online English learning engagement. The results showed that: (1) the digital nativeness of Chinese college students was at a high level; (2) their online English learning engagement was above the medium level; (3) “growing up with technology” had no significant impact on online English learning engagement, “comfortable with multitasking” had a significant negative impact on online English learning engagement, while “reliant on graphics for communication” and “thriving on instant gratifications and rewards” had significant positive impacts on online English learning engagement. Online English teaching suggestions and future research directions are further provided.
